Having had to take my husband to the emergency room while I was pregnant, because he almost tore off his finger in a lathe, I have only one hard and fast rule he must now abide.
If you think you will just done this one last thing quickly DON'T!
I trust him to read the instruction manuals. For some reason he is only willing to read his new tool's manuals, but hey, it is at least something. After all, he has me when he needs to use the television remote.
I also trust him to keep his tools sharp, and his workspace clean. I do have to keep on him to wear a face-mask for dust, but he is very careful to shield his eyes, so that isn't a problem.
Overall, he is a very careful and responsible individual when it comes to his tools. The only times he has had accidents where when he was going to do just this one last thing quickly. The lathe incident was because he wanted to adjust the tool rest quickly and he thought he could do it quickly and easily and that there was no reason to turn off his lathe. He was obviously quite wrong.
The most important rule to stay safe in a workshop is to think before you do act. And if you think you can do this one thing quickly without following the normal safety procedures, DON'T!
Take the time and do it right. Your project will not get done sooner if you have to interrupt your work for a visit to the emergency room. Such visits will also discourage your wife to allow you to by that CNC machine you have been wanting.
