Outdoor fun. |
For outdoor fun a bicycle is a must. Older children living not too far from school in low traffic areas often ride these to school. In fact, most schools have a rack where students can lock up their bikes. But, if this is not an option for toting oneself back and from school, it certainly should be number one on the list of outdoor toys. A tricycle for the tots and an age and size appropriate bike for those past the age of four or five.
A backyard sandbox will conjure up ideas of an impending beach vacation. It should be a sturdy structure and big enough to allow for neighbors and cousins and school chums. But, please, keep it covered when not in use; neighborhood cats will make it a handy place to scratch around in too. The commercial variety come with covers, but if the sandbox is a homemade construction, a regular plastic tarp with some means of securing the cover from wind and rain and animals will be adequate.
A wagon is a definite need for the very young. The three or four year old will find this an enjoyable means of outside play. The girls will take their dolls, they kitty cats, their stuffed toys for a stroll. Both boys and girls will find these handy for gathering their treasures on their morning walks with mother. These are soon outgrown, however, when chidren would rather push forward-biking-than pull.
Not to be left out the most important of all, the swing and slide set. Children of all ages love to swing. They swing and they dream and then to rest from this, they climb the steps to the slide, and with arms wide let themselves go. This is daring for the very young. A larger gym set may have handle bars and these are excellent for exercise.
In the hot days of summer, every child needs a swimming pool. Not every parent can afford a large family pool, but nearly everyone that has a backyard can afford a small plastic pool. This affords hours of fun. Filling the pool is always an excuse for mom to allow the child to run through the spray. This turns on the giggling and the fun.
If there is are gardens, however small, wee gardening tools are an excellent choice for the child to dig alongside the gardeners in the family. In this way they are not only getting fresh air but are learning the importance of gardening. Allowing them their very own little space to garden is recommended. When they get to eat their first bit of lettuce they grew, it will be something to remember. The fruits and vegetable in the grocery stores will take on new meanings when they begin to understand where they come from.
Tents for the elementary school child are inexpensive ways for the future cub scouts to get their first taste of the rough and tumble of outdoors. Possibly another family member can agree to spend an all night adventure in the tent. But if not, a lightening bug catching session and a marshmallow time at a small bonfire with adults in attendance will be a never-to-be-forgotten experience.
Wheelbarrows too, are handy toys when light weight and designed for the potential gardeners. Perhaps, alongside dad or mom, they can have their very own along with a rake and a spade for helping with planting.
And on and on are the outside toy, some store bought and some thought up on the spot by an imaginative child bent on having an adventurous time. Maybe the most important part of this adventure will having someone who will listen to his adventure tales. Won't you listen today?
